How to diagnose a brand new motor that is not working?
It is rare for a brand new motor, ESC or FC to come faulty from the factory. But the reality is that it's a possibility, and it's an issue that any pilot will encounter at some point in their hobby. In this article, we will answer the following frequently asked questions:
Why won't my brand new motor work?
I did everything that I saw in the video! Why my motor won't work?
The ESC is dead on arrival (DOA)! Is that why the motor doesn't turn?
A motor that won't turn can be many things. Follow along the steps below to pinpoint the problem.
- Bent Plug Pins - Sometimes, the pins from the FC or ESC plugs can be bent. Please check them out. If that is the case, use a wooden toothpick to correct alignment.
- Bad Soldering - Do a visual inspection and slightly pull all the connections from motors to the ESC pads. Those connections should be solid.
- Firmware Issue - Verify that the configuration on the FC is correct. Also, verify that BLheli settings are OK.
- ESC DOA - If the pins are correct, the soldering is fine, and firmware is OK, access the motor tab section in BetaFlight and conduct an individual motor test. Please swap the motor that is not responding with a healthy motor from another output channel. If the problem stays in the same output channel, the problem is faulty ESC.
- MOTOR DOA - On the other hand, if you swap the motors and the problem changes from ESC outputs (in other words, the problem moves with the motor), then without a doubt, the problem is with the motor.
PS - Always remember to bench test with props removed from the drone.
